A leading gaming giant, Ubisoft is exploring blockchain technology in its Strategic innovation lab, to study the emerging technology and its uses. The director of the innovation lab, Lidwine Sauer stated in an interview with CCN that the gaming news site IGN is interested in the blockchain’s ability to provide unique ownership of digital assets.
Lidwine Sauer found a quality to "finally have real digital collectables that cannot be replicated by anyone and can be 100 percent owned by you,"
As per Sauer, Blockchain technology can provide security to creative property as well.
"Thanks to the blockchain, we can now have the equivalent of a digital Picasso, with the advantage that it's a lot more difficult to steal something on the blockchain than to steal a Picasso." - Lidwine Sauer
Blockchain Technology can benefit Ubisoft in downloadable content (DLC). DLC is distributed by the game publisher and includes updates such as aesthetic changes and new features.
Sauer stated that Ubisoft is not only looking for DLC. It's planning to use innovative technology beyond that.
"We want to go further than that, We feel there's something even more interesting to find [through the blockchain], and we're in the process of trying to find that interesting thing." - Lidwine Sauer
This is not the first time when a gaming platform showed interest in Blockchain technology. CryptoKitties is a gaming site that used the virtual platform for creating digital cats that a gamer could buy, collect, “breed” and sell.
Another short-lived game introduced was Crypto All-Stars. As the name suggests, the game involved big names of the virtual world such as litecoin creator Charlie Lee and revolved around trading digital cards depicting Virtual celebrities.
